First Edition of this Translation, printed upon large vellum. A superb copy, decorated with 410 mini¬ atures of various sizes in gold and colours of the greatest brilliancy, and in the finest preservation. All the initial Letters are also highly illuminated. It is one of the most beautiful specimens of Verard’s printing which can be seen. It has not been hitherto observed that Verard was accus¬ tomed to take off the presentation copies of his books on large vellum. In this copy, as a proof of the fact, the last leaf of the second volume is taken from a copy upon vellum of a smaller size.

This copy was purchased at Lomenie de Brienne’s Sale by Count Mac Carthy for 1600 francs. In addi¬ tion to its rarity, only one other copy being known upon vellum, this impression is particularly valuable, as it contains many original passages which have been either altered or omitted by Baluze in his edition, bound in blue morocco by C. Lewis.

panied by any Commentary, it was thought expedient to print the ancient Greek Scholia on that first of Poets, which was accordingly published in the year 1517. In this work the citations from the text are printed in capitals in order to distinguish them from the comment, and facilitate the use of the books to the pupils.” Roscoe’s Leo Xth.
This volume is in the finest preservation. These are the only specimens of the First Edition of Homer, and of his most ancient Commentator, upon vellum, which can ever, in all probability, occur for Sale in this Country, 250 1.

With the exquisitely beautiful Original Drawings by Percier inserted, and Proof Impressions of the Plates upon India Paper, by Girardet, Marais, &c. This volume exhibits the perfection of the Art of Printing upon vellum. The exquisite beauty of the vellum, and the skill of the Printer, cannot be surpassed. Didot states that he selected the sheets of this copy from the two which were printed upon vellum.
“ The article of the greatest importance in the whole Col¬ lection (Marshal Junot’s,) was the matchless Didot Horace of 1799, containing the original drawings from which the exquisite Copper Plate Vignettes were exe¬ cuted. This was purchased by Mr. Hibbert for §£\40. nor was it in any respect an extravagant or even a dear purchase.” Bibliographical Decameron.

This is one of the most desirable specimens of early English Printing upon vellum, that can be imagined. The vellum is remarkably pure and fine. “ In this Orchard you may disport you in opportune time. Querite et Invenietis pulsate et aperietur vo bis" from the address to the Reader ; richly bound in crimson velvet, by C. Lewis, with clasps and a blue morocco case.

It commences with a Latin Epistle of Nidobeato, in which he mentions the Commentators upon Dante, and says et nos aliquibus locis pleraque conjunximus, aut usu comperta aut ex di- versis auctoribus et annalibus tamquam ex fluminibus derivata : quce cumjuvare turn etiam delectare legentem possint. Lombardi has extracted many excellent read¬ ings from. this Edition. For example, the 141s£ line of the 4th Canto in all the subsequent editions stands thus: Tullio e Lino e Seneca morale, and this line was quoted by Guarderaiti as an instance of a want of unity, but the true reading, Tullio e Livio e Seneca morale ivas restored from this edition by Lombardi.

This is the most valuable Edition of Ptolemy printed in the 15//i century, and contains the earliest specimens of Maps upon copper. The edition with the date of 1462 was printed at Bologna in 1482. The following extract will shew with what care this edition was exe¬ cuted.

The following curious extract is taken from the XLIX Chapter of this Book.
“ The IIII braunche of this synne of glotonye is of them that ouer nobly wyl ete & drynke, and which despende & waste that wherof an hondred poure men myght be suffy- cigtly fedde. Suche peple synne in many nianers. Fyrst in grete despences that they make. After in that, that they use ouer grete gredynes & ouer grete delvte. After in the uayn glorye thed they haue. But this is not onelye thex- cesse of the throte, but it is ofte for bobance and for grete pryde, and for the praysyng of the world that they seche so dere metes & multeplye so many messes wherof ofte tymes growe many synnes. The V brauche of glotonye is the curiosite of glotons, whiche thvnke on none other thynge but for to delyte them in metes, they ben proprelye lychorous which seche not sauf onely the delytes of theyr throtes & mouth. In III thynges namely lyeth the synne of such peple, Fyrst in the grete charge that they haue in pourchasyng & in arayeng their metes, After in the glorye & in the grete playsir that they haue in seyng & beholdyng them, & that they may recounte what dylygence they put to that, that the metes been wel arayed, & that eueryche haue his right & propre sawce, & how they may of one

Thene be sayd the bourdes for entremesses & thus goeth the tyme, and the caytyfs forgete themself & reason slepeth and thynketh nothynge of the deth, ne on the synnes that they do, their stomack cryeth and sayth. Dame throte ye slee me, I am so ful that I am lyke to breke. Thene the lychorous tongue answeretli though thou sholdest to brest I shal not suffre this licorous mete escape me. After the lycorousnes of mete cometh vayn- glory that is to remebre it. Thene desyre and wesshe that they had as longe a necke as a crane, & as grete a bely as a cowethat they myght yetdeuoure & swalowemore mete. Now hast thou herde the synnes that comen of glotonye & of lycorousnesse, and by cause that these synnes sourden and comen ofte in the tauerne, which is fontayne of synne. Therfore I wyl a lytel touche the synnes that ben made and done in the tauerne. The tauerne is the scole of the deuyl where as his dyscyples studve, and his propre chapel where as his seruyce is doon, and that is the place where he sheweth & doeth his myracles bothe day and nyght, such as apperteynen the deuyl for to do. Atte chyrche our lord god hath a custome to shewe his vertues and to make his myracles lyke as ye may see in many places, the blynde for to see. the lame and croked to be redressyd, to mad men their wytte, to dombe men speche, & to deef men theyr heryng, But the deuyl in the tauern doth al the contrarye, for the tauerne is his chapel as is aforesayd where men dooth to him seruyce, for whan the man goeth to tauerne he goeth alle ryght, and whan he retorneth he hath neyther fote ne honde by whyche he may hym self bere ne susteyne, and whan he retorneth he hath loste alle thys, lyke as he hath neyther wytte ne reason ne memorye in hym self. Suche been the myracles that the deuyl maketh in the taverne, & what lesson is redde in the tauerne I shal say to you. Ther is redde lerned herde & seen all fylthe and ordure of lyeng myssayeng renyeng god and his sayntes, mysherkenyng brawlyng & many other synnes. Thene sourden & comen stryues homycides or manslaughter, there is lernyd to stele and to hange, the tauerne is a fosse and a pytte of theuys, and also it is the fortresse of the deuyl for to warre ayenst god and his sayntes and the tauerne that susteyneth suche peple dysordynate ben partonners of alle theyr synnes that they doo in theyr tauernes. And certeyn yf a persone sayd as moche shame to hys owne fader or to his moder or to his knaue, as suche manere peple do to they fader of heuen and to our lady and to the Sayntes they shold be moch angry, and fynde and sette other remedye than god dooth.’’

This is a book of great curiosity. It is stated in the Pre¬ face that the Author , John of Salisbury, was present at the Murder of Thomas a Becket, whose intimate friend he was, and that dum pius Thomas ab impio milite cedetur in capite, Jo - hannis hujus brachium fere simul percisum est. The work contains many quotations from the Classical authors, includ¬ ing the story of the Ephesian Lady from Petronius. At the conclusion of the Tale the author says. “ Tu hystoriam autfa- bulam quod his verbis refert Petronius pro libitu appellabis. Ita tamen ex facto accidisse Ephesi et Flavianus auctor est."

Aldus Pius Manutius Romanus, was born at Bassano, a village in the Roman territory, about the year 1449. He settled at Venice in 1488, or 1489, under the patronage of Alberto Pio, Prince of Carpi, and the first book printed by him probably was
415 Musaji Opusculum de Herone et Leandro, quod et in Lati- nam ad verbum tralatum est. This edition is without date, but was printed in 1494. It is also the first edition of this Poem. The present fine copy of this very rare book is bound in blue morocco. It is quite complete. - 4to.

This edition is particularly interest¬ ing to Ahline Collectors from the dedications to the Admi¬ rable Chrichton, to Lorenzo Massa, and other literary men of that period. The biographers of Chrichton are principally

indebted to Aldus for the particulars rf his Life. “ He was a contemporary, an intimate friend of Chrichton’s, and an eye-witness of those public disputations which he records.’’ In a criticism on the classical use of the word stare, Aldus observes, stare enirn firmitudinem quondam liabet. Quo modo , Critoni, usurpasti in iis versibus quos ad me in tuo ad urbem Venetam appulsu superiore anno scripsisti. Placuit autem eos hoc loco describere ne homines eorum desiderio teneantur. The Edition of 15S0 of this poem, must have been rare, even at this time. These volumes contain several other poems of Chrichton. The present very fine copy was formerly in the Collection of Mr. Renouard ; it has since been rebound in calf extra, gilt leaves , and has an additional portrait of Paulus Manucius added from the edition of the Orations of 157S.
