The 1984 Soccer Team, lead by senior co-captains Greg Louro and John Knowles, finished their season with a re¬ cord at 1-16-1 (won/loss). Although this

record was disappointing, the season was highlighted by defeating Connoly with a score of 2-1 in the last seasonal game. Considering the circumstances, Coach

The 1984 field hockey season was in¬ deed a successful one. Coach Sue Curt’s young team, consisting of only five se¬ niors, earned a spot in the state tourna¬ ment and captured second place in one of the toughest divisions in the state. Cap¬ tained by Pam Bustin, Cindy Stafford and Julie Pereira, the team tied arch rival Case 1-1 and defeated the Division One champs, Dartmouth.

During the state tournament game,

Somerset met the Hingham team for the second consecutive year. This time, the Raiders put up a bitter fight. The match

94

■'

was scorelss through two overtimes, and during the third OT, Somerset lost on sud¬ den death penalty strokes-a tough way to end the season. Although the season end¬ ed on a low note, the team was never lacking in spirit. Uniforms were worn to school (high heels and all), rallies were held at houses, and the field was decorated.

High scorers for the Raiders was junior forward Donna Gendron, while three players we were named to SEMC division II all stars: Julie Pereira, Pam Bustin, and Cindy Stafford. Link Pam Bustin was vot- ed MVP of the league, and was also cho¬ sen to the Boston Globe All-Scholastic team.

CROSS COUNTRY 1984-The Desert

Everyone knows the desert as a barren place. It is an arid and harsh environment-not many living things flourish there. But, there are some few of us who know that, on the rare occasions when it does rain there, the desert momentarily is bursting with life and the smell of flowers.

The era of the 80’s so far has been like a desert to our Cross-country team. True, there have been some sparks of life, but the old pizzazz is gone. The competition of Division I, declining enrollments, lack of commitment of athletes, all have been blamed for the demise. Whatever if it is, we are all hoping for these flowers to grow again.

Those flowers are personified by our young runners-our freshmen and sophomore runners-the people who went out for our team for the first time. We want them back, we want them committed, we want more of them.

This was our 20th year of cross country competition at Somerset. It was a pivotal year-a year of pride-a year to make new resolves. We hosted the 13th annual Somerset Invitational and we also served as the host team of

96

for the Southeastern Mass Conference Meet. OUr debt to the sport of cross country running was paid.

We were shocked by the loss of a veteran runner on the day of our first meet-we regrouped-we looked for new leadership and we got it. It would have to be called the year of Tim “Bubka” Lockett. Tim was there when we needed him. Tim was the leader. This boy did not possess the tools of an outstanding runner, but he worked at his demanding sport, progressed, and in our mind, made a most valuable contribution. Cheryl “Turbo” Collins was again plagued by shin and knee pain. She may not have been born to run, but, nonetheless, she tried. Turbo took home a medal from the State Coaches Meet, and gained much respect from her teammates. Sa¬ mantha Searles was a sparkling addition to our team-she has earned the title “distance runner”. Christine Hopkins and Wendy Vezina continued their successful ways. Some promising newcomers were David Gilmore, Dave Walsh, Patrick Lockett, Ken Ford, Karen Dubreil.

When the final gun sounded at Franklin Park on November 10th we thougt thought of our blessings for next year-Samantha, Christine, etc. and Young Ken David, Jeff Tippins, Steve Prario, Jeff Berube, Tim Collins if they work through the summer of 1985- - -they just might make the air smell of flowers again.

97

Candy Taveira, were named to various newspapers all-star teams. The two team captains will be sorely missed next year, as coach Hall will continue to keep Somerset’s winning volleyball seasons a tradition.

Volleyball

(first row) Jodi Lizotte (c), Chris Reagan (c), (second row) Jennifer Howard, Lisa Weinberg, Julianne Bustin (third row) Wendy Hunt, Candy Taveira, Coach Wayne Hall, Felicia Gedacht, Gina DeGaetano

This year has been a fantastic one for the volleyball team. Coach Wayne Hall has trained his team to be coordinated and they were. Their Division II record was ten wins, zero losses, an umble- mished mark helped in part by all the

players abilities in working together. The team consists of: Julianne Bustin, Gina DeGaetano, Felicia Gedacht, Jen Howard, Jodi Lizotte, Chrissie Reagan, Candy Taveira, and Lisa Weinberg. Rea¬ gan and Lizotte, captains, along with

Football

1st row; Carl Dimanno, Rick Couto, Jeff FAria, Billy Simons, Scott Sylvester, Steve Botelho, Doug Coray (captains) Jim Rebello, Bob Baker, John O’Neil, Tony Botelho, Jim Meilo 2nd Row: Matt Leary, C.J. McGee, Dave Banville, Dave Benevides, Mark Correia, Steve Souza, Mark Leary, Robbie REbello, Mark Furtado, Ken Southworth, Steve Chmielewski, Shannon McDonald, Head Coach Ed Winslow 3rd Row: Coaches Ken Day and John Soares, Brian Mendes, Mike O’Neil, Sean Owens, Mark Griffin, Rich Goodrow, Tim Katon, Doug Medeiros, Todd King, Gary Rockliffe, Todd Dimanno, Karl Golz Wayne Rousseau, Tom St. Laurent, Wayne McGrady

Once again our varsity football team enjoyed a successful sea¬ son. With the leadership and spirit shown by the captains, Doug Coray and Steve “Bubba” Botelho, and the other hardworking seniors including Jim Meilo, Carl DiManno, Mark Leary, Jim Re¬ bello, Bob Baker, Rick Couto, Bill Simons, John “J.O.” O’Neil, Jeff “George” Faria, Scott Sylvester, and Tony Botelho, the Raiders endeed their season with a great record of 6 wins and 4 losses. The only lossed were an opening gave defeat to Canton (ranked in the top 10 in Div. Ill), Attleboro (with starting quarter¬ back Mike O’Neil out with a knee injury), Darmouth (who went on to win the Division II Superbowl) and a heartbreaking 20-18 loss

against Case.

The Raiders, on the other hand, did have some great games. Coach Winslow stated “I guess the highlight of the season would come from our behind win against Barnstable, when we had that big fourth quarter, that and the game against Dartmouth, we lost to a great team but kept up the pressure right to the end.” The Raider squad also had exciting wins against Chelsea 25-0, New Bedford 19-13, Durfee 12-7, Falmouth 24-0, and Stoughton 27- 14.

The football season, according to Coach Winslow, began during the off season. With a lot of hard work in the weight room and

100

' J

1

hours of practice at summer camp, the Raider men were able to produce one of the finest teams Somerset High has even seen. Because of all this hard work, the Raiders placed many players on the All-Star team including Steve Botelho, Doug Coray, Jim Mello, Carl DiManno, Dave Benevides, and John O’Neil.

All in all, the Raiders had a fine season. On numerous occasions they proved to Coach Winslow and to the students at Somerset High School what a truly outstanding team they were. Next years team will certainly have a tough act to follow.

Without his dedica¬ tion, we would not have such a fine yearbook. I would also like to thank Kim, Karen, Sherri, April, Diane, and Chris for the exten¬ sive time they spent on this year’s RAIDER. I would also like to express our thanks to Norval Garnett of Josten’s for all his help.

We leave Somerset High with many goodbyes to the friends we have made. We will always have the great memories of four awesome years. I wish every member of the Class of ’85 the best of luck in everything you set out to accomplish and hope you achieve all your goals.

Best of Luck,
